Introduction
Pastor Ian said that Christians are a singing people. Why do we sing?
One reason for our singing is joy in what the Lord has done for us. Have a brainstorm session to see how many songs can you think of with lyrics that mention joy or rejoicing, then of course, sing a few! Maybe create a video of your family making a joyful noise to the Lord.
Background
This is the third week of Advent. In the past two weeks we’ve talked about the hope and peace that the coming of Jesus has brought. Today we’ll think about the joy he gives.
Pray
Our Father, you are the God of joy. Joy begins with you and comes from you and through you. Your joy is full and you find joy in saving people from their sin. Help us to understand how much joy is in you. May we not look elsewhere for this abundance that can only be found in you, and may we be be strengthened with all power, according to your glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy. (Colossians 1:11)
Looking into the scripture passage
Today’s story takes place after the birth of Jesus, when he was still a tiny baby.
Read: Luke 2:25-32
Ask: How did Simeon know who the baby Jesus was? How did he feel about seeing Jesus?
What was the reason for his joyful praise? [Focus on verse 30 for this answer]
Read: Luke 2:33-35
Even though Simeon rejoiced at seeing Jesus, he gave Mary a sad message.
Ask: What will happen one day that will make Mary sad?
She will watch as Jesus is put to death.
Does that seem like a reason to rejoice? How was Jesus’s death turned from a sad occasion to one in which can be joyful?
Jesus told us that if we follow him, we will have trouble in the world, but even when we are sorrowful or troubled, we can still have joy. How are these two things possible at the same time?
Read: Romans 8:35-39
Ask: What is true even in the bad and sad things we face?
Apply the passage
Activity Think through the life and work of Jesus. What about his life and his message brings you joy? [some ideas: he cares about everyone, including little children; he heals the sick; welcomes sinners; died to give us eternal life]. Spend time worshiping, praising, thanking Jesus for the joy he has brought you.
Do you know anyone who is sad during this holiday season? Make them a card with the verse from Romans 8.
Memorize
